Fu Jazz All Stars & Raymond Pande

The Fu-Jazz Band are an eclectic group of professional musicians from different walks of life, who have three things in common – supreme craftsmanship, total freedom of improvisation and an insatiable lust for Jazz.  The name implies the fusion of various music styles – including African – with international jazz.  Borne from a Warehouse Theatre music project in 2007, for over six years now, the Fu-Jazz team have helped keep jazz alive in Namibia.

The rhythm section of the band is composed of three family members, uncle Jeremiah ‘Tayo’ Casinda on bass, brother John Kali Casinda on keyboards and nephew Fernandez ‘Piu’ Paulus, on drums. The have now teamed up with a young singer of remarkable talent: Raymond Pande. Borne from a Zimbabwean father and a South African mother, Raymond combines in himself different musical cultures – plus he loves soul and R&B.

New instrumentalists are Jan Willem Beuke, who studied popular music and jazz-guitar, vocals, arrangement and composition at the Tswane University of Technology in Pretoria, and Olav Slagsvold, a Norwegian saxophonist involved in the Namibia / Norway music teachers exchange program between the College of The Arts and the Norwegian University of Trondheim. Olav holds a bachelor degree in music science and has been a conductor of and a performer in Big Bands back at home.

Fu-Jazz strives to involve local and international musicians of standard on a rotating basis – thereby promoting cultural exchange, lifting the standard of jazz and developing new audiences for jazz in Namibia on an ongoing basis.
